Overview:

Since the time of the initial invasion the clans have captured many manufacturing centers. One of the goals of the initial invasion was to refit these centers and create others in order to shorten supply lines back to clan home space. While on paper the idea looked good, in practice it turned out to be a nightmare. The clans had been expecting the Inner sphere to have at maximum Star League technology or slightly better. It was not until Jamie Wolf's reports came to light before the invasion just how low technology had become. Even between the Wolf's Dragoons final report and the invasion of the Inner sphere technology continued it decline. While the Grey Death Memory Core offered the houses of the Inner Sphere a chance to reacquire lost Star League era levels of technology its spread was slowed and often kept to the centers of the political power. The control and lack of time for the spread of technology kept the required technology out of the Periphery regions through which the Clans invaded.

For the clan engineers it was a nightmare. Patched together machines, missing and improvised parts, and even the general conditions of the buildings themselves caused multiple delays. Adding into the delays was the Inner Sphere's houses way of packing up and evacuating entire manufacturing centers to move them out of harms way. With all the problems piling up the solution grew complex. In a move to quicken the process the clans finally began moving new machinery and rebuilding the captured factories. By 3056 the first phase of the plan was complete, and many of the parts manufacturers were up and running but at a much reduced capacity. 3056 also saw the beginning of a massive shipping effort by Clan Wolf and other invading clans to ship in nearly complete factories for reassembly. Ten years later the captured factories were ready to start test production.

While some clans moved to immediately begin production of battlemechs Clan Wolf figured on getting the kinks out by creating a number of vehicles that could be massed produced and allow for retraining of the work force not evacuated when the planets fell. The first product to roll off the assembly lines for the captured Odin Manufacturing on Satalice was the light Picador scout hover tank.

Capabilities:

Named for the mounted person who stabs bulls in the shoulder in order to weaken them for the bullfighter, the Picador hover tank plays this role well. Weighing in at a mere fifteen tons the little tank can move at a staggering 162 km/h in a flat out run. Weaponry for hamstringing enemy mechs and tanks includes a brutal hitting heavy medium laser and the sophisticated advanced tactical missiles.

The heavy medium laser is mounted in the front on the tank, right next to the pilot. Despite health concerns and some electronic interference from the heavy medium laser playing havoc with the Picador's main HUD the pilots love the raw striking power. The only complaint so far is from pilots is the heavy medium laser not being mounted in the tanks turret. Augmenting the short range fire-power of the heavy medium laser is Clan Wolf's new ATM system. The tri-shot is set in a turret in order to provide the Picador some covering fire while streak to and from enemy units. However, to further allow the tank to cover the distance between itself and its prey the Picador also mounted a ECM Suite.

The ECM suite has had some problems according to ROM agents. Reports that connections between the ECM generator and the power supply seem to have developed a habit of working lose. When the connection comes loose the ECM will suddenly shutdown immediately bringing the Picador unto enemy sensors. While the generator does has secondary connection system it still takes time for the pilot to flip the switch. Technicians' reports place the blame on a combination of weak connectors and vibrations caused by the tanks vectored exhaust. While simple soldering of the connections will solve the problem, pilots have come up with an easier faster solution. The troubled connection sits by the pilots' knee behind an access panel. Hitting the access panel cover with a hammer will dent the metal in pinching the connector between the outer haul and the access panel fixing the problem. For pilots of the Picador the denting in of the panel cover has become a christening for new Picador's assigned to a unit. Needless to say, many libations must also be consumed during this ritual beating making the pilots' fix for the bad connection the preferred method of repair.

Variants:

Currently the Picador has no known "factory" variants, but a couple has shown up apparently modified by crews or their technicians. The most common pilot variant of the Picador deals with swapping out the ECM for an active probe or a TAG system. Other variants seen have been LRM 5 racks for the ATM or an extended range laser in place of the inaccurate heavy medium laser.

Deployment

Currently the Picador is only assigned to second line forces. Occasionally where cavalry/pursuit style units are needed the Picador will most likely be found.
